Description

The webinar tackles the most prominent issues raised by the digital economy with regard to two main areas of law: competition law and data protection law. From a data protection perspective, it highlights the challenges in terms of data protection enforcement, the loopholes found by the data protection authorities to investigate and sanction the tech giants and the decisions taken by the European Court of Justice on these matters. It also highlights the implications of digitalization for the European economy that have developed so far around the technology giants. Specifically, the emergence of big techs raises many competition law issues. Given the ability of big techs to abuse their technological and data superiority, EU competition law is evolving. The recent case law and the Digital Markets Act (DMA) are important steps in addressing risks posed by big techs and illustrate a trend toward the creation of new big tech-specific ex ante regulatory regimes.
